Ever been asked by a student how to use a word? What collocates with "evidence"? Is it always true? Does the meaning change? Has your student ever shown you a discourse example that is correct and completely contradicts your earlier explanation?
We have all experienced that.
Which brings us to: Corpus Tools! But easy to use ones.
Despite being around for a while, corpus tools have always been overlooked. However, over the last few years, they have gained popularity and become essential components of teaching and learning of languages. This practical session will look at three ‘friendly’ and ‘light’ corpora tools for those who are not as linguistically oriented but are still interested in reaping their benefits. We will privilege the learner’s point of view and explore a few activities that promote learner autonomy.
By the end of the session you should...
have a better understanding of Corpora and its practical applications in the classroom
become aware of how to use three ‘light’ corpora tools.
understand how they can be used to promote autonomy/self-directed learning.
have practical activities you can use to promote self-directed language study/analysis.
Come prepared to learn, reflect, participate, and connect.
The session runs from 5:30 to 7:00, with a post-session analysis and discussion at a local pub afterwards.
Reserve your seat on Eventbrite today. Hope to see you there!
