I was working at a school and doing some 1:1 tutoring on the side. I was burned out, underpaid, and overworked. When the pandemic happened, I found Learn YOUR English, joined their program, and started my own online business. They helped me iterate my offer, identify my ideal client, and apply SLA principles to my course so that my students are extremely happy.
Thanks to my course English Know-How, I now only work 3 days a week and earn 4x more than I did at the school.
Although I have been teaching for 30 years now, which has made me a very experienced teacher, it was only when I became a LYE member that I realized how important it is to be part of a community of teachers, where we are not told what do, rather we are invited to reflect and test approaches and tools that help students to become better learners. It has been a transformational experience, not only as a professional, but also as a person. I would like to give a special thanks and praise to Leo who has always supported my growth by kindly and wisely pushing me.
LYE really helps me reflect on my teaching and why I do what I do in the classroom. It affords me the time and space to do so. Without LYE, I wouldn’t have been so critical of my praxis. It’s also helped solve the problem of there not being a space to have an open and honest discussion about teaching with like-minded teachers. Too often teachers are convinced that their way is the best way and aren’t honest enough to ask “How can I be a better teacher?” Ego is the issue here.
LYE has created a space to connect with fellow teachers. Without it, I don’t know how I would’ve had the chance just to talk about teaching in a relaxed space.
Through this program, I get all the guidance and resources I need to be a better teacher every day. Previously, I felt a lack of professional development and wanted to learn how to be better. I also felt a lack of like-minded teachers who not only support but challenge me. I’ve also worked alone and lacked a broader perspective on teaching. As soon as I joined LYE, it changed my understanding of teaching. It’s very humbling and encouraging at the same time.
I found the course both challenging and rewarding. Challenged my learned concept of what grammar is and presented some new ways of seeing and presenting things. The pace was good as was all the material, both within the course and also the external references that were recommended.
I have learned so much from this community, especially about dogme and how to stress less at the moment of planning lessons. I have learned about other ways that I can help my students, also is a very dynamic community, we learn so much from the podcast, our meetings and the books we read each month.
Since joining the program, I’ve noticed I’ve developed a more critical eye as I reflect on my process of designing and carrying out my lessons. Andrew, Mike, and Leo are incredibly supportive people and my teaching journey wouldn’t be what it is without them.
I've come away with a refreshed approach; not only having a broadened theoretical base, but also practical elements on how to apply it. I'm excited to take what I've learnt into the classroom and give my students the opportunities to develop transferable skills that they can use at home. This course is not just interesting, but highly useful and practical.
I've just completed the program and all I can say is: A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. The course has led me to extensive reflection on everything I thought I knew about grammar and filled me with hunger- for more knowledge. Thank you for such an inspiring course. I can't wait for more.
